Director of Network Engineering & Operations

Advantage Tech is searching for a qualified Director of Network Engineering & Operations, for their client based out of Kansas City, Mo.


The Director of IT Network Engineering & Operations provides leadership and management of the Network Engineering/Operations team responsible for the engineering design, planning, installation, operation, and upgrades of the enterprise-wide network infrastructure.

  1. Establishes engineering and operational standards for the enterprise-wide network. This includes engineering, design, installation, and operation of the enterprise-wide network to support strategic and tactical business direction.
  2. Maximizes network performance by collaborating cross-functionally with senior counterparts to develop overall network operational rigor and network technology strategy for both cloud and non-cloud based topologies.
  3. Seek opportunities to leverage development and technology efforts across the business and allocates financial and human resources to ensure initiatives are supported.
  4. Consult, architect, and deliver a High Availability Network that is built with a focus on customer centric availability and resiliency. 

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the enterprise’s network engineering team. This includes hiring, training, staff development, performance management and annual performance reviews. 
  • Network Design – Evaluate new and emerging technologies to drive future systems/network capabilities. Oversee development of technical design for critical components and newly approved technologies. 
  • Partner with enterprise architects and key business stakeholders to understand future business needs. 
  • Network Optimization – Proposes new technology designs to dramatically improve systems/network reliability and performance. Identify new and emerging technologies that will provide significant increases in system/network performance. 
  • Ensure enterprise communications network meets or exceed its operational objectives to other business units by establishing best practice processes and maximize the value of its third-party service providers. 
  • Liaise with the senior leaders to ensure alignment between the network and enterprise architectures and initiatives to ensure strategic planning. 
  • Works collaboratively with the information security team to assist in the prevention, detection, and mitigation of security events. 
  • Flag and escalate business risks timely to IT Leadership. 
  • Work with leadership peers to establish and govern the day to day decisions required to effectively manage enterprise communications network.
  • Tracking, reporting and management of key enterprise-wide network infrastructure metrics including team performance and capacity planning in alignment with required support and key initiatives. 
  • Provide technical leadership in design, architecture and administration through identifying problem areas and upholding product quality. 
  • Manage all levels of support for implementations and operations. 
  • Develop, support, and communicate network engineering policies, standards, guidelines and procedures. 
  • Develop and manage the budget for Network Implementations, Network Operations and Network Engineering, communicating with IT leadership budget and forecast direction and changes. 
  • Manage vendor relationships and SLAs. 
  • Oversee and coordinate IT wide Disaster Recovery planning and testing exercises. 
  • Monitor projects on an ongoing basis, evaluating progress, quality, managing issue resolution as necessary. 
  • Manage risks, assessing gaps/opportunities, and implementing action plans to mitigate risks, when applicable. 
  • Communicate project status to management and other stake-holders as appropriate. 
  • Deliver highly complex projects using in-depth knowledge within the Infrastructure and Operations domain. 
  • Recommend, implement, and enforce policies and procedures to improve the performance, scalability, and security of the network. 
  • Manage Network Engineering staff schedules and project work assignments. Ensure project work is completed on schedule and with high quality. 
  • Responsible for mentoring, conducting performance evaluations, counseling and providing disciplinary actions to assigned personnel with a goal of developing a team oriented approach with positive results. Comply with all employment laws and support affirmative action/equal opportunity goals. 

Education & Experience Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent and at least seven years in a Network Engineering related field or at least five years of related experience and/or training (in addition to experience requirements below); or equivalent combination of education and experience required. 
• Minimum of 5+ years of experience Managing Networks & Operations at the Director level. 
• Minimum 5+ years of deep experience with Network Engineering. 
• Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on architecture and design expertise. 
• 3+ years of experience managing exempt level employees. 
• Extensive technical knowledge of Cisco networking and network security technologies and protocols. 
• ITIL/ITSM experience required. 
• Cisco Certified engineer in one or more of the following (CCIE, CCDE, CCDP, CCAr, CCDA, CCNP, CCNA). 
• Expert knowledge and experience in the deployment and maintenance of enterprise switched networks, including (VTP, STP, HSRP, trunking, VLANs, port security and monitoring) in a multi-vendor environment. 
• Expert knowledge and experience in the deployment and maintenance of enterprise MPLS BGP environments. Expertise in multi-circuit environments and high network availability. 
• Experience with load balancing technology, such as Citrix Netscalers. 
• In-depth knowledge of Voice over IP; experience with Cisco and Microsoft VOIP products. 
• In-depth knowledge of Quality of Service technologies with demonstrated implementation in a large enterprise organization. 
• Experience with Solarwinds and other network management and monitoring solutions. 
• Experience with developing network/security policies, procedures and documentation. 
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and policies within the information services field required. 
• Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. 
• Experience Managing teams, vendors, and SLAs 
• Proven track record leading network implementations, operations and engineering 
• Experience with large scale, high availability network environments 
• Experience with Private cloud setup, open source technologies and IT automation 
• Requires taking responsibility for IT and business customer satisfaction and overall success of IT Networking. 
• Requires interfacing with a variety of IT and business customers in a polite, positive, and professional manner. 
• Extensive knowledge of future technology trends. 
• Strong written and oral communications skills. 
• Self-motivator that can work with little direction. 
• Will be required to be on-call after hours and weekends on a rotating basis. 
• May be required to work occasional off-shift hours to cover customer maintenance and on-site 

Education & Experience Preferred:

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent and at least seven years in a Network Engineering related field or at least five years of related experience and/or training (in addition to experience requirements below); or equivalent combination of education and experience required. 

• Cisco Certified engineer (CCIE, CCDP, CCAr). 

• Advanced knowledge of voice and data communications networks, and associated elements, including LAN/WAN/Data Center design and operations, TCP/IP and SNMP, HFC networks, and Advanced Video technology. 

• Advanced knowledge of relevant Data Center network technologies including, ISIS, BGP, OSPF, STP, VRF, Fabric Path, VLAN, SDN, Spine and Leaf Topology (Spine and Leaf), NSX, VXLAN, TRILL, SPB, HSRP, VRRP, GLBP, ACLs, Packet Filters, Application Layer Firewalls, Load Balancers, etc. 

• Advanced knowledge of Data Center network design, architecture, protocols and network topology Multi-vendor Data Center networking hardware experience including Cisco, Juniper, Arista, F5, A10, etc.
